United Kingdom Expands Methanol Toxicity Warning List with 11 Countries

Methanol alert sign

The UK authorities has added 11 further destinations to its travel advisory list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to several high-profile incidents such as the deadly loss of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a harmful chemical commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.

Government Recommendations for Travellers

Foreign Office representative a senior official said that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of methanol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits overseas, stick to well-known venues and avoid local brews or free shots," Falconer said.

"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."

The complete roster of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
